Donor Spotlight: Thomson Reuters

In celebration of their Global Impact Day, Thomson Reuters partnered with CitizensNYC to gather volunteers to make a meaningful difference for New York City’s elderly community. Hosted by CitizensNYC and BEETS3, the event focused on packing care packages for low-income senior citizens, many of whom rely on these deliveries for essential living supplies.

BEETS3, a family-run organization led by Matthew Johnson, plays a pivotal role in supporting seniors through its Golden Years Helping Hands program. This initiative provides environmentally friendly cleaning and laundry supplies to ease the financial burden faced by many low-income seniors. With inflation driving up the cost of basic living essentials, the program ensures seniors not only receive necessary items but are also protected from products that could pose health risks to them or the environment.

The program began in July 2022 at Kowal House in Manhattan Valley and has since expanded to serve seniors at the FoodBank’s Neighborhood Center for Adults 60+ in Central Harlem. The Golden Years Helping Hands program delivers supplies monthly, directly to seniors who opt into the service.

At the volunteer event, Thomson Reuters' team assembled 50 care packages containing essential cleaning supplies, laundry items, masks, and hand sanitizer—vital tools for helping seniors maintain a clean and safe home environment. Joining the volunteers was Thomson Reuters CEO, Steve Hasker, who received a recognition gift from Matthew Johnson in appreciation of his support.

For CitizensNYC, the partnership with Thomson Reuters on this project highlighted the power of collaborating with grassroots leaders and corporations in uplifting local communities. The event provided immediate relief to seniors and introduced volunteers to community-based organizations like BEETS3, who are on the ground making a daily impact.

As we look to the future, we’re excited to continue building these connections, ensuring that through volunteerism and support, New York City’s most vulnerable residents feel seen and cared for. Together, with partners like Thomson Reuters, we can continue to create lasting change.
