Citizens NYC helping to fuel local change with community grants
CitizensNYC and our community partner the NYC Fair Trade Coalition were highlighted on News12 in the Bronx.
The Sustainable Fashion Community Center, an initiative of the NYC Fair Trade Coalition, focuses on democratizing the fashion industry through offering affordable clothing and fostering community spirit.
Andrea Reyes, Executive Director, highlights Citizens NYC’s commitment to making a true impact through our Community Leaders grants: “We really have to think about where it’s all going and are we having the true impact that we set forth to have. So these grants really help me keep pushing and keep including more services.”

New York is still New York
CitizensNYC and our annual New Yorkers for New York Gala Honorees were highlighted in the New York Social Diary today.
“Cited this year for outstanding involvement were celebrated bandleader Peter Duchin a long standing Citizens Committee Board member, along with community arts leader Tanya Birl-Torres, community organizer Bobby Digi Olisa, and TV’s Michelle Miller.
Established during the 1970’s fiscal crisis to help New Yorkers help themselves, Citizens Committee annually awards hundreds of mini-grants for neighborhood improvement projects — encouraging local residents in all five boroughs to prosper like the characters portrayed in the lively musical show.”

CitizensNYC was mentioned in a New York Post op-ed today written by Kathryn Wylde, the president and CEO of Partnership for New York City as part of the promotion of the new We ❤️ NYC campaign.
“Civic activism was ignited, and we saw the birth of the Association for a Better New York, the Central Park Conservancy, Citizens Committee for New York City, the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development, the Partnership for New York City, New Visions for Public Schools, the Citizens Budget Commission and hundreds more organizations fueled by love for the city and a refusal to accept its decline.
Under the We ❤️ NYC, there will be opportunities for all who care about the future of our city to volunteer, lend their voice and remind each other what makes New York the greatest city in the world.”

Grantee Partner Mention: Friends of Olmsted Beil House
We love everything old about Staten Island. So why don’t we embrace the real history of Staten Island? … It’s the Olmsted-Beil House. Frederick Law Olmsted, a renowned landscape architect instrumental in the development of Central Park and Prospect Park, and Carlton Beil, a naturalist and educator at the American Museum of Natural History, lived there at one time or another. The 2021 Responsible 100: The New Yorkers who are making the world a better place
As each year winds down, City & State turns its focus to honoring a select group of New Yorkers who exemplify what it means to be a socially responsible citizen. Unlike the many power lists we publish recognizing the most influential individuals in city and state politics, this feature instead highlights those who are dedicated to helping others. These leaders – in business, government, nonprofits and advocacy – exemplify the optimism and idealism that make New York a national leader, especially as partisan gridlock hinders the nation’s ability to contend with an unending pandemic, heightened racial tensions and a rising climate crisis. How local leaders are getting funding to help their communities with CitizensNYC and The Showing Hearts Foundation
While New York City has built and funded resources for our neighbors that need assistance, for many people it’s still not enough. As a result, we often see non-profits, groups of like minded volunteers, or simply friendly neighbors fill in the gaps where city, state, or federal help is lacking. And groups like CitizensNYC aim to do just that - fill in the gaps. They empower community leaders who are already on the front lines of change in their own neighborhoods to do more.
