CitizensNYC Welcomes Julie L. Shapiro as CEO!
Citizens Committee for New York City is proud to announce the appointment of its new Chief Executive Officer, Julie L. Shapiro.
With a long and impressive history of nonprofit leadership, Julie becomes CitizensNYC’s 7th CEO. She is the first woman to serve in this role.
Julie has spent more than 25 years in the nonprofit sector, predominantly in New York City, working at the intersection of workforce development, youth development, and education. She is known for her strong track record of creative partnerships and collective impact work to advance educational and economic equity.
Most recently, Julie served as Senior Vice President overseeing strategy, policy, community coalitions, and external affairs at TNTP (formerly The New Teacher Project). Prior to TNTP, Julie was the Chief Executive Officer of the Fund for Public Schools, where she led public-private partnerships with the philanthropic, business, and nonprofit communities and secured critical investments for education priorities that advanced the City's Equity and Excellence for All agenda. These investments enabled NYC Public Schools to pilot innovative projects, accelerate and scale promising, outcome-driven initiatives, and respond strategically to emerging needs in support of NYC's 1,800 schools, one million students, and their families.
“Julie's exceptional leadership, strategic vision, and dedication to creating positive change make her a perfect fit for CitizensNYC’s mission and values,” said CitizensNYC Board Chair Chris Ruggeri. “With her guidance, our organization will continue to be a driving force and empower New Yorkers – especially those in low-income areas – to come together and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods”.
Before her work with NYC Public Schools, Julie was Executive Director of The Door, an internationally recognized youth development agency providing a range of integrated services for 11,000 New York City youth annually. Julie spearheaded a decade of growth in every program area, more than tripling the operating budget. Under Julie’s leadership, The Door launched Broome Street Academy (New York City’s only charter high school that prioritizes foster care and homeless youth), added two supportive housing sites, significantly increased its legal services for immigrant youth, and expanded career and education services to the South Bronx with the Bronx Youth Center.
Julie also worked for eight years as a Senior Vice President at Seedco, a national nonprofit intermediary, where she provided funding and capacity-building assistance to networks of community-based organizations that worked collectively on workforce development and asset-building initiatives.
"I'm thrilled to bring my experience to CitizensNYC and connect with NYC's vibrant community leaders,” said Julie Shapiro. “Together, we'll explore innovative ways to collaborate and strengthen partnerships that amplify our impact. I’m so inspired to build on Citizens’ incredible history and to continue to uplift the communities in this city we all love."
Julie holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School and an undergraduate degree from Brown University.
