COVID-19 Conversation: Census Edition

FB+COVID+Conversations+Sept+2020.jpg

We heard from Julie Menin (Director of NYC Census 2020 and Executive Assistant Corporation Counsel at the NYC Law Department) and Alyson Grant Tarek (Grants Program Director of NYC Census 2020) who discussed the importance of the Census and its partnerships with community groups led by diverse people of color that are doing on the ground Census work in underrepresented communities.

We also heard from Aminta Kilawan-Narine (Founder and Executive Director of South Queens Women’s March), and Nirmala Singh (Founding Board Member of South Queens Women’s March) whose group received a Citizens Committee grant to distribute essential food and hygiene items to residents. During their giveaway events, they’ve also been conducting Census outreach in different languages to ensure their communities are counted.

Here are some action steps our panelists recommended you can take to continue the conversation and ensure New Yorkers are counted in the Census!

  • If you haven’t completed the Census yet, click here to fill it out now, the deadline is September 30th

  • Reach out to your family, friends, and network to encourage them to fill out the census

  • Remind people that are not in NYC right now that they should fill out the Census as well

  • Sign-up to volunteer with the 2020 Census campaign in NYC; click here for more information

Join us at our next COVID-19 Conversations on Thursday, October 1st at 12 PM!
